About Midwifery

  • A midwife is a qualified healthcare provider trained to care for women throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. In Utah, midwives go through comprehensive training and national certification through either the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) or the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM).

  • Utah recognizes several types. A CNM (Certified Nurse-Midwife) is a registered nurse with graduate-level midwifery training, most often practicing in hospital settings. A CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) is nationally certified through NARM and trained specifically for out-of-hospital birth. An LDEM (Licensed Direct-Entry Midwife) holds Utah state licensure, must be a CPM, and is authorized to carry and administer specific prescription medications. A DEM (Direct-Entry Midwife) may practice legally in Utah without state licensure and is not subject to the same regulatory restrictions as an LDEM.

  • A midwife is your primary clinical care provider — she conducts prenatal visits, monitors mother and baby throughout labor, catches the baby, manages emergencies, repairs lacerations, performs newborn exams, and provides postpartum care. A doula is a trained labor support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support but performs no clinical duties. Both can be part of your birth team and work beautifully together.

  • Time and relationship. Our prenatal appointments run about an hour — you'll see the same midwife consistently, ask every question on your list, and never feel rushed. We treat you as an active partner in your care, not a patient moving through a system.

  • For low-risk pregnancies attended by qualified providers with clear hospital transfer plans, research shows outcomes are comparable to birth center and hospital births. Our team carries emergency medications, oxygen, IV supplies, and resuscitation equipment, and is trained to recognize and respond to complications — and to transfer care when needed.

  • We recommend reaching out between 8 and 12 weeks, though we welcome women at any stage of a healthy pregnancy. If you're past 30 weeks, we still encourage you to contact us — we frequently accept late transfers.

  • Our midwives are highly experienced, having attended hundreds of births across home, birth suite, and birth center settings. Becoming a Certified Professional Midwife requires completing a rigorous training process including participation in over 50 births as a primary provider.

  • Our midwives are trained in obstetric and neonatal emergencies and carry oxygen, IV supplies, hemorrhage medications, and resuscitation equipment. Our goal is to recognize complications early and transfer to a hospital before a situation becomes critical. In the event of a transfer, your midwife stays with you and communicates directly with hospital staff.

COST & VALUE

  • Our maternity package is $5,600. This covers all prenatal visits, continuous labor and birth support, immediate postpartum care, newborn screenings, one ultrasound, a birth kit, 24/7 breastfeeding support for the first 10 days, and postpartum follow-up visits through six weeks. The price is the same whether you birth at a suite or at home.

  • A natural, drug-free vaginal birth in a hospital typically runs between $6,000 and $10,000 — and that's just the hospital fee. The doctor's fee is an additional $3,000 or more, and any interventions, labs, anesthesia, or surgical delivery are billed separately on top of that. Our $5,6000 covers everything from your first prenatal visit through six weeks postpartum.

  • Yes. We offer discounts for late transfers joining care after 30 weeks with proof of prior prenatal care, and we have a sliding scale for clients who need financial assistance. We believe every woman who wants midwifery care should be able to access it — please ask us about your options.

Check out our pricing page for more information.

  • Yes. A $1,000 deposit secures your spot on our schedule and is due at your first or second prenatal visit. We work with you on the remaining balance across your care timeline, with full payment due by 36 weeks.

Check out our pricing page for more information.

  • Yes, for an additional fee of $1,250 we offer all prenatal visits in the comfort of your own home.

  • You'll follow an evidence-based visit schedule — monthly in the first and second trimester, every two weeks in the third trimester, and weekly from 36 weeks. Most clients have 10 to 14 prenatal visits total, and every appointment runs about an hour.

INSURANCE & BILLING

  • We don't bill insurance directly during your care, but upon request we can bill your insurance after birth for possible reimbursement. We also accept HSA and medical savings accounts as payment.

  • Yes. Midwifery care qualifies as a medical expense under most HSA and FSA plans, and we accept both as payment. This is often the most straightforward way for families to cover their care.

  • Routine labs are billed to your insurance directly, or offered at a discounted cash rate. One ultrasound is included in your package. If additional ultrasounds are needed they are billed separately to insurance or at cash rates.

  • We provide billing support after your birth upon request. We recommend calling your insurance before your first appointment to ask specifically about out-of-network midwifery and CPM coverage so you know what to expect going in.

  • Items billed separately include routine labs, Rhogam injections ($250+), non-stress testing and biophysical profiles, antibiotics for GBS in labor if desired, EMS transport charges if needed, physician or hospital charges in the event of a transfer, urgent care visits, and blood typing for mother or baby.

BIRTH OPTIONS

  • Yes. Water birth is available at all of our locations. For home births, a birth pool and liner are included in your package. Many clients find laboring and birthing in water significantly reduces discomfort and creates a calmer, gentler transition for baby.

  • Yes. We support vaginal birth after cesarean for clients who meet clinical criteria — typically one prior cesarean with a low-transverse incision, appropriate time between pregnancies, and a placenta positioned away from the previous incision site confirmed by ultrasound. We do both VBACs and water births, often at the same time.

  • Yes. Home birth is one of our core services and the price is exactly the same as a suite birth at $5,600. Your midwife and assistant come to you fully equipped, and your package includes a birth pool and liner for water birth at home.

  • Twin pregnancies are managed on a case-by-case basis. In Utah, LDEMs are not permitted to attend twin births under their license, but unlicensed direct-entry midwives may do so legally. We evaluate each situation individually — schedule a consultation to discuss your specific circumstances.

  • We support clients navigating breech presentation and will discuss your options thoroughly as your pregnancy progresses. Management depends on gestational age, baby position, and your individual health history.

  • GBS positive status doesn't automatically disqualify you from water birth. Antibiotics for GBS in labor are available if desired at an additional cost. We'll review your options with you and help you make a fully informed decision during your prenatal care.

  • Yes. We maintain caps on the number of clients each midwife takes per month specifically to ensure continuity — the person you've built a relationship with throughout your pregnancy is the person catching your baby. You'll also have a trained midwife assistant with you throughout labor and birth.

  • Yes — completely. There are no visitor restrictions at our suites or at home births. Bring your partner, your children, your doula, whoever matters to you. We do recommend a dedicated support person for young children so they have someone focused on them throughout labor.

  • We are not able to provide epidurals, surgical delivery, or care for pregnancies that fall outside our clinical scope. If complications arise requiring hospital-level care, we coordinate a smooth transfer and your midwife stays with you through that process.
